New Class Offerings
There is a need for strong leaders in today’s fire service. With unusually high turnover rates, more firefighters are moving quickly though the ranks without having a chance to learn essential leadership skills. The officer development classes listed below were created by Deputy Chief Frank Viscuso. These classes are designed to teach firefighters about the essential skills, and introduce them to the necessary traits, that every fire service leader should possess before leading others, both in the fire station and on the fireground.

Officer Development – Leadership Traits (1 – 1.5 hours)
This class includes a discussion on the highest rated fire service leadership traits. Among them are loyalty, adaptability, determination, enthusiasm, empathy, courage and honor. Although this class is listed under officer development, it’s a popular course for fire service leaders at all levels, from the rank of firefighter to the department head.
Officer Development – Leadership Skills (2 hours)
This class covers the necessary leadership skills that are needed for fire officers in order to motivate, manage and maintain discipline. Among the topics included are Mentoring and Succession Planning, Critiquing others, Delegating, Preventing Freelancing, Technical Report Writing, Tackling administrative tasks, Dealing with subordinate Issues, How to conduct a Post Incident Analysis, Leadership on the fire ground, and Building Morale.
Customer Service (1 hour)
Every organization has a culture. It is either created by design or default. Creating a culture of customer service does not happen by accident. This class will introduce you to proven theories, methods and techniques that can help your members make a great impression on the people they come in contact with. This class will also help build organizational morale and prevent unnecessary liability.
